The project was born out of a real need; families all over the country are struggling to make ends meet.
The Love Can Project is a community project that allows people who can afford more to donate non-perishable goods and toiletries to those in need. We hold regular drives to collect donations.
Cape Town has some very generous residents who are always keen to give back. Some people donate a can or two and others donate in bulk – all depending on what you can afford to spare.
Each drive has a theme such as tinned food, toiletries or even baby products. Donations are then sorted by our volunteers into care packages and redistributed to communities, schools and safe-houses in need.
With love – we can do anything!
We recently joined forces with Ikamva Labantu as we were very touched by their Afternoon Angels project.
Children have a right to be safe and supported throughout their school years. Sadly, life in Cape Town’s townships doesn’t always allow for this. Most schools lack extracurricular activities and aftercare facilities, and many parents only return from work late. As a result, when the school day is over, children are often left to roam and play in the streets unsupervised. This time on the streets increases exposure to the dangers of violence, crime, gangsterism and drugs.
The Afternoon Angels programme was started by a group of 53 women from Cape Town’s townships as a response to this issue. These women have opened their homes to local children to provide a place of safety where they can receive a nutritious meal, emotional support, and a space to play in the afternoons.
This is a preventative measure that keeps children away from the dangers of the streets and provides a warm, nurturing environment for them to feel safe, supported and free.
There are 28 safe hubs where over 1000 kids are taken care of daily in the various townships of Cape Town that require our assistance with food. We therefore donate all our excess canned food, porridge and pulses are to assist with food for these hubs.
The Love Can Project is one of many community projects in Cape Town, and it can be hard to know who you should support. That’s why we’ve teamed up with some great organisations who make sure our collections go to the people most in need.
We don’t just work with other awesome charities and community projects in Cape Town though, we facilitate Love Can Projects and events for businesses and organisations who want to give back.
Companies who’d like to work with us can choose to collect donations themselves or even to donate brand new items. We help them identify the items most needed and who needs them most so that they can be sure of making a real impact.
