Feeding homeless people is how we started – we now serve the homeless community of Cape Town 3 times per week. In addition to these kitchens we also support other local organisations that help the homeless, like U-Turn, Care Cruisers and Hope Street, by supplying them with soup, sandwiches and other fresh ingredients.
We meet lots of different characters at our kitchens – some are regulars we get to know and other people just pass through. Whatever their circumstances, however, someone in need of a hot meal is always welcome at a Ladles of Love soup kitchen. We do not pass judgement, we simply offer food to anyone in need of it.
Edgar always looked forward to the Ladles of Love soup kitchen every Tuesday evening, as it filled more than just his tummy. “We can really taste the love in it”, he said.
Born into a family damaged by alcoholism, Daphne survives on the streets whilst her kids are cared for by her sister. Despite this, she always arrives with a smile and a grateful heart.
Back in 2016 we saw a need to go further. Instead of only helping homeless people, now we wanted to expand and offer fresh, nourishing food to anyone who might be in need. This lead to us launching The Munch Club, our in-school feeding scheme designed to feed hungry children so they can better focus on their studies.
We launched The Munch Club at Prestwich back in 2016. It was the first school to join the scheme – we started by serving lunch one day a week and were pleased to add a second day soon after. Prestwich is a commuter school based and therefore faces some real challenges as many learners travel long distances in order to attend, often on an empty tummy.
“Our school is truly thankful for the weekly soup donations we receive from Ladles of Love. As our school is situated in a sub-economic area, the soup helps to feed a lot of hungry children. Whilst the children are eating, we also try to teach them good eating manners. We can truly recommend The Munch Club to other schools.”
– S. Wood, Admin Assistant, Ruyterwacht
We began our relationship with this school by accident – it’s the most wonderful story. One of our lovely volunteers, Lynnie, was delivering food one morning to Ruyterwacht Prep School, but her GPS led her elsewhere. She ended up at De Waveren who were so happy to see her with the food that we just knew we needed to bring The Munch Club to them on a permanent basis.
